Chef preparing the classic clubhouse sandwich

My Classic Recipe

As someone who grew up in Alberta, I’ve always loved a good Clubhouse Sandwich. For me, the key is getting the right balance of flavors and nailing the layering. Over the years, I’ve refined my own version, adding a personal twist to make it a little more special. Here’s how I like to make mine:

Ingredients:
  • 3 slices of your favorite toasted bread (I prefer whole wheat or sourdough)
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise (add a bit of Dijon mustard for an extra kick)
  • 2 slices of crispy bacon
  • 4 slices of roasted turkey breast (or chicken, depending on what I have on hand)
  • 1 fresh, crisp lettuce leaf
  • 2 slices of ripe tomatoes
  • 1 slice of mild cheddar cheese (optional but adds richness)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
  1. Prepare the bread: Toast the bread until golden brown. Spread a thin layer of mayonnaise on one side of each slice. I like to mix in a touch of Dijon mustard with the mayo to add a little zing.
  2. Build the first layer: On the first slice of bread, place the turkey slices, followed by the lettuce leaf. Make sure the turkey covers the entire bread for a uniform bite.
  3. Second layer: Place the second slice of bread on top, mayo side up. Add the crispy bacon and tomato slices. Season with a pinch of salt and pepper to enhance the flavor.
  4. Optional cheese addition: If you're using cheese, place the slice on top of the bacon and tomatoes. You can lightly melt the cheese for an extra indulgent touch.
  5. Top it off: Add the final slice of toast, press gently, and secure the sandwich with toothpicks at each corner. Cut it into triangles to highlight the classic three-layered structure.

Why I Love This Recipe

This version of the Clubhouse Sandwich stays true to the original but has my own personal twists, like the Dijon mayo and my favorite type of bread. I love how the layers create a fantastic mix of textures—the crunch of the toast and bacon combined with the freshness of the lettuce and tomato is just perfect. It’s simple, satisfying, and always a hit, whether I'm having it for a quick lunch or an easy dinner. I like to pair it with crispy fries or onion rings on the side, and a drink like coffee, a soft drink, or even a refreshing juice makes it even better!
